summary: Black Diamond Apples from Tibet The Black Diamond apple is a rare breed from the family of Huaniu apples that is cultivated in the Tibetan region of Nyingchi. Despite what the name suggests, the apple rather is a purple hue, with white pulp on the inside. Its unique color is due to the region's high altitude of over 3,500 m.
origins: Facebook North American Fruit Explorers - NAFEX James Nave · October 5, 2021 · For people who continue to be unaware of the Tibetan Black Diamond apple scam, here's a brief summary. The Black Diamond apple photos you see posted everywhere are photoshopped. It is a real apple cultivar, but it is NOT BLACK. And it is not a great tasting apple. Real Black Diamond apples have variable coloration like ALL "black" apples do, with some being almost black and others being red. Black Diamond is apparently a seedling or a bud sprout of the Chinese cultivar Huaniu from Gansu province. The Chinese cultivars Huaniu and Huaguan both have dark red coloration and are used in Chinese apple breeding programs. Huaniu was one of the first internationally trademarked Chinese apples and also has a Red Delicious type shape. Black Diamond didn't get recommended for widespread production in China because it did not have superior taste, but someone decided to grow it anyway because of its look. It is primarily sold as a gift apple, not as an eating apple. Fruit gifts are common in China and Japan. There are many black apple cultivars including but not limited to Arkansas Black, King David, Black Amish, Black Anne, Black Bud, Black Ben, Kingston Black, Black Gilliflower, Black Jersey, Black Limbertwig, Black Oxford, and Birkenfelder Rotäpfelchen. Black Diamond's color differs a little from other black apples in that it is more purplish black than reddish black. But otherwise, there is nothing unique about it. There is little doubt that Arkansas Black and King David as well as most other black apple cultivars are superior in taste. Here's what real Black Diamond apples look like without photoshop - North American Fruit Explorers - NAFEX Miekal And · July 18 · There's several internet memes circulating that Black Diamond Apples can only be grown in the Tibetan region of Nyingchi. I find it hard to believe that they aren't grown in the US... Supposedly they are a different genotype than Arkansas Black. "Black Diamond apples are only sold in high-end supermarkets in Asia, with individual fruits selling for between $7 and $20."
