Berner Rosenapfel

identification: Medium size, round to round conic and lightly ribbed. The base colour is yellowish green, over which are deep red flushes.The stem is medium long and medium thick set in a deep and narrow cavity with light russet radiating out onto the shoulder. Mature apples develop a pale lilac bloom.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish with some red stains under the skin, fine grained. Very juicy, very sweet, refreshingly tart with a spicy flavour. Turns brown with exposure to air.
uses: Dessert and culinary. Excellent juicing apple.
origins: Found growing as a wild seedling in Kanton Bern (Switzerland) by F. Baumann in 1888. It was later listed and marketed by Daepp Nurseries in Oppligen (Switzerland).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, though tending to become weakly vigorous at full maturity. Upright pyramidal. The fruit develops on two and three year limbs and pruning is necessary to encourage new wood for large crops. The tree has a tendancy to become biennial. This variety is best suited to garden orchards as well as farmgate and local market sales.
cold storage: Keeps for two months, but apples from young trees tend to develop brown spots after just a few weeks.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to scab and mildew.
harvest: In the first half of the fourth period. Fruit hangs well beyond ripeness.
