identification: Medium to large size, round, slightly flattened at the stem cavity and somewhat conic. The skin is fairly thick and smooth, base colour is pale yellow, blushed bright orange on the sun-exposed face, though the colours dull once the apple is picked. The stem is medium tending to short and slender, set in a deep and wide cavity which is usually russetted and often lipped. The calyx is small and usually closed, set in a wide and somewhat deep, pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Tender and moderately fine-grained. Juicy, sweet-tart and mild.
origins: First mentioned by A.J. Downing in his 1845 edition of "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America" as being identical to Waxen ; he updated that assessment in his 1857 edition with information that the Belmont originated as a chance seedling growing at the time at the garden gate of a Mrs. Bean, near Strasburgh, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (U.S.A.), and was known as the Gate Apple and Mamma Bean. It was subsequently taken by Jacob Nesy Sr. to Belmont County in Ohio where it became popular under the name of Belmont. The is no information on its parentage.
cultivation: Moderately vigours, medium size, upright spreading tree. Produces good crops every other year but the branches are slender and have a difficult time supporting the load. Good for farm gate sales but too easily bruised for shipping.
