identification: Medium size, round to round conic. Yellow base colour over which can be blushes of orange red, mostly around the calyx basin. Brownish russet lenticels scattered across the faces, reddish against the blushed areas..
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Firm and sweet.
uses: Used for rootstock, produces trees two thirds the natural size.
origins: Arose in Russia during the late 1700s and distributed to Europe and North America during the late 1800s. Listed as Arcad by South Dakota (U.S.A.) Niels Hansen who states in his "A Study of Northwestern Apples" (published 1902) that it originated in Russia. Horticulturalist S.A. Beach, in Volume II of his "The Apples of New York" (published 1903) describes this apple as Beautiful Arcad and lists Arcad Krasivui, Arkad Krasivui, Arkad Krasiwui, Arkad Krasiwni, Beautiful Arcade as synonyms.
cultivation: One of the few apples that can be grown true from seed most of the time, though not dependably.
cold storage: Does not store well.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the fourth period.
notes: The variety produces excellent, cold-hardy root stock which dwarfs to 65% of natural size. It is also valuable as a pollinator for other apple trees.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
