synonyms: Bare Land, Bareland, Bear Land, Bosbury Pear
origins: Originated before the mid?1600s in Bosbury Parish,Herefordshire (UK), where it was found growing at the Barelands farm next to Upleadon. The manor at Upleadon belonged to the Knight Templars which suggests that this might be a variety which was brought from the Middle East. However DNA analysis has been inconclusive in this respect. Though unpalatable enough to motivate Reverend John Beale to complain that it is so bad that even swine refused to eat it. Nevertheless, the region quickly became famous for the excellent quality of its “peare cider.”
