identification: Medium tending to large. Round conic and frequently irregular. Greenish yellow base colour over which is a wine red wash covering about half the apple on the sun exposed face. Medium sized light coloured lenticels. The stem is long and slender, set in a funnel shaped cavity. The calyx is open, medium large and set in a ridged basin.
characteristics: The flesh is slightly yellowish, firm, coarse? grained. Juicy sweet?tart, with a hint of spiciness. The skin tends to be tough.
uses: dessert
origins: American variety which was introduced to Switzerland druing the 1880s.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading pyramid, tending to develop drooping branches as it matures.
cold storage: Keeps up to five months in cold storage, best after a month and a half. Does not tolerate temperatures below three degrees.
vulnerabilities: Highly susceptible to brown rot on the fruit. Also highly susceptible to scab.
harvest: Middle of fourth period. The fruit hangs well on the tree at maturity.
