identification: Medium tending to large, round, uneven shape. The skin is pale yellowish green with red blush.
characteristics: The flesh is crisp and firm. It tends to be sharp with a lingering sweet aftertaste. Some people say it re minds them of brandy.
uses: Grown primarily for cider, but also used for juice and cooking.
origins: Found as a chance seedling in an orchard in Ballyvaughan, County Clare (Ireland). Once a common apple throughout County Clare in Ireland during the 1800 and 1900s. There is one remaining orchard in Ballyvaughan; in addition the Irish Seed Savers Association maintains the variety at its East Clare site.
cultivation: This is a self?rooter which can be easily propa gated by planting the cuttings. Late ripening apple. It was pa ticularly well adapted to the climate and terrain of coastal County Clare. Crops heavy. Tip bearer.
harvest: In the middle of the fourth period.
