identification: Fruit is large and round tending to round conic. Yellow over which are crimson blushes. The stem is short and stout, set in a moderately deep cavity. The calyx is small and closed, set in a shallow, plaited basin.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured and often stained red under the skin. Firm, coarse-grained, juicy, sweet.
origins: Charles Downing stated in his 1868 update of his brother's "The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America" that the apple originated in Ridgefield, Connecticut (U.S.A.). Spencer A. Beach noted in his "The Apples of New York" (published 1905) "that the original tree was in full bearing during the Revolutionary War" which took place from 1775 to 1783. It was highly regarded as a baking apple and sold well in the markets of its time.
