identification: Small to medium in size, round. The base colour is green washed red and marked with prominent darker stripes on the sun exposed face. The eye is small and partly open, set in a very shallow basin which is often ribbed. The stem is somewhat stout and short, set in a shallow, funnel shaped basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white and very sharp, fruity. Medium sharp, vintage.
uses: Used to make brisk and fruity, slightly astringent apple juice. Primarily a cider apple which produces a single variety sharp and fruity light cider.
origins: NFCAn old popular cider apple named after Backwell Village, North Somerset, UK.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Tends to bear every other year.
cold storage: Keeps barely a month.
