Aucuba

summary: A rare, possibly extinct cultivar, the Aucuba was grown primarily for its variegated leaves.
identification: Medium size or marginally larger, round tending to conic, often lopsided. Skin is smooth with a yellow base colour over which is a pink to red wash marked with deeper red striping. Small russet lenticels.
The stem is long and slender, set in a somewhat narrow cavity, sometimes thinly russetted. The calyx is small and can be closed or partly open, set in a shallow, narrow basin with a knobbed crown.
characteristics: The flesh varies from white to pale yellowish. Tender, fine grained, breaking. Juicy, sweet-tart and aromatic.
origins: First listed by the French nurseryman Louis Noisette in Le Jardin Fruitier in 1839, stating that the origin of this cultivar was unknown. At the time, the Aucuba was well already well distributed through the Paris (France) region, according to Noisette. Unfortunately, the cultivar was been deemed second-rate and was primarily grown for its unusual white-flecked foliage rather than its fruit. Additional debate as to whether the variegation of the leaves was caused by disease has further contributed to its rarity.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading. Cold hardy. Precocious. Bears generous crops annually.
cold storage: Keeps up to six months in cold storage but flavour tend to weaken after four months.
harvest: Can be picked from the start of the fifth period. The fruit has a tendency to start dropping before it is ready for harvest.
