identification: Small, round and flattened. The skin is smooth and shiny. Dark purple flush covers the entire surface, but the shaded side can be lighter in colour and sometimes even with a large patch of yellow base colour showing. The lenticels are abundant and tan coloured. The stem is slender and medium long, set in a deep and wide cavity which is often russeted. The moderately small, closed calyx is set in a shallow and slightly ribbed basin.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish, fine?grained and soft. Sweet and aromatic. Becomes mealy very quickly in storage.
uses: Considered a second grade eating apple.
origins: This is possibly one of the oldest French varieties and was first described by agronomist Olivier de Serres (1539 to 1619) in Le Th atre d’agriculture et m nage des champs the name Calvau Noir as being widely grown even prior to the start of the 1600s throughout the Anjou region of France.
cultivation: Weakly vigorous, upright spreading spur bearer. Ripens in mid to late second period. Stay well on tree after maturity.
