summary: Dating back to the late 1700s, this north German cultivar has likely disappeared.
identification: Large, round tending to conic. The base colour is pale yellow maturing to more golden yellow marked with deep red striping on the sun exposed face. Numerous red lenticels. The stem is long and moderately stout, set in a narrow, lightly russetted cavity and surrounded by a knobbed crown.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellow and lightly stained pink under the skin. Fine-grained, tender and aromatic. Similar to Gravenstein.
uses: A fresh eating apple, also used for baking.
origins: First documented in the 1806 issue of "Systematisches Handbuch der Obstkunde" Engelbrecht: Deutschlands Apfelsorten Lucas, Oberdieck: Illustriertes Handbuch der Obstkunde, Stuttgart 1859?1875 states that this varietal originated in the Holstein region of northern Germany
