identification: Small, conic. The base colour is greenish-yellow which is washed dark red on the sun exposed faces. Knobbed crown. The stem is short and somewhat thin, set in a deep and narrow cavity. The calyx is small, partly open and set in a puckered basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained. soft and juicy with a vinous flavour.
origins: Developed at the Iowa Agricultural Experimental Station in Ames, Iowa (U.S.A.) by H.L. Lantz during the early 1900s and released in 1921. Flower parent was Allen Choice pollinated with Perry Russet.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous.
vulnerabilities: Somewhat sensitive to fire blight and mildew.
