identification: Small size and round conic. The base colour is greenish-yellow over which is a wine red blush covering three quarters of the surface with darker striping. The striping extends faintly onto the base colour on the shaded side. Sparse, light-coloured lenticels. The calyx is small and slightly opened, set in a shallow basin. The stem is very long and slender in a funnel shaped cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, often with a red stain under the skin. Very similar to the Crimson Beauty in flavour and texture.
uses: Dessert
origins: Developed by Richard Wellington at the New York State Agriculture Experiment Station, Geneva, New York (U.S.A.), by crossing Early McIntosh with pollen from New York 845 (Red Canada x Yellow Transparent). Released in 1938.
