Altländer Rosenapfel

identification: Medium size. Round conic with angular sides and knobbed crown. Base colour is yellowish green over which is a dark red blush with some broken stripping on the sun exposed face. Look for a partly closed calyx set in a moderately deep basin which is surrounded by a knobbed crown. The stem is short and moderately slender and set in an open, moderate deep, russeted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is firm, coarse-grained, chewy with a tart, vinous flavour.

origins: Altes Land, Germany where it was widely grown during the mid 1800s.n in about 1850
cultivation: End of the first period.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to canker.
harvest: During the first half of the fifth period.
notes: Widely grown throughout northern Germany until about the 1930s when it fell from favour among orchardists. It is still kept by hobby orchardists with an interest in heirloom apples, but neglected by commercial growers. Some European nurseries still offer young trees to their clients.
