summary: The Alma Sweet is excellent for use in apple sauce, either on its own or blended with more flavourful apples.
identification: Small size tending to medium, round-flattened. As it ripens, the base colour turns yellow over which is a red blush and scattered stripes on the sun-exposed face, sometimes extend over more than half the surface. The stem is long and slender, set in a shallow cavity. The calyx is large and partly open, set in a shallow and wide basin.
characteristics: Very sweet, dry some years and very juicy other years. Flavours tend to be somewhat bland.
origins: Albany, New York State, U.S.A.
cultivation: Upright tree with dense growth. Heavy regular pruning is essential.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
