identification: Medium to large. The medium heavy skin is almost white before the tree reaches maturity, after that the colour is a creamy yellow. The stem is short. The calyx is closed, set in a wide, open basin. Very closely resembles its flower parent, the
Bedfordshire Foundling .
characteristics: The flesh is white. Tender and juicy.
origins: Developed by Albert Etter, innovative orchardist in the Bear River Valley (later called Ettersburg) area of coastal California (U.S.A.), this cultivar was originally named the Bedfordshire Junior since it was supposedly a seedling of an obscure British cultivar called the
Bedfordshire Foundling . The apple was patented in 1944, the name was changed to Alaska in 1946 to better reflect its size and pale colouration and also for marketing purposes.
