no image available
type: Dessert
synonyms: Akin, Aiken, Aikin, Aikin's Red, Aikin Red Winter, Aikin's Striped Winter, Akin Seedling, Akin's Seedling.
identification: Medium, sometimes large size. Round, frequently irregular shape, ribbed faces. The base colour is yellow over which is a dense pattern of bright red stripes. Occasionally a faint white bloom develops on the skin. Lenticels are small and light coloured, often protruding off the surface. The stem is short to medium long and stout, set in a medium deep and funnel shaped cavity which is slightly russeted. The calyx is small and normally closed with long petals, set in a moderately deep and wide basin which can be puckered.
characteristics: The flesh is white, coarse-grained, somewhat tender. Very juicy, refreshingly sweet-tart and mildly aromatic.
origins: According to William A. Taylor, Pomologist in Charge of Field Investigations for the U.S. Bureau of Plant Industry in the 1903 Yearbook of the Department of Agriculture, the Akin apple was grown from seeds brought from Tennessee (USA) by Mrs. Matthew England in 1831 and planted on a farm near Lawrenceville, Illinois (USA). Of the 17 seedlings that arose from this planting, only one was selected for further propagation by John Akin who had, in the interim, acquired the property. In 1861, Akin took enough cuttings to create additional trees. The cultivar quickly attracted attention and, starting in 1868, Akin's trees were being sold in nurseries and subsequently received a medley of awards for its quality as an eating apple. It appeared in Simpson and Hogue's 1884 catalogue as Akin's Red.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Upright to upright spreading. Slow to start bearing fruit. Bears regularly, but most abundant crops in alternating years. It favours warm soils.
cold storage: Keeps five months.
notes: Wealthy apple is similar in shape and colouring.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
cold storage weeks: 20
