Identification: Medium to large, round. The base colour is yellow, over which is a dark red blush. Very tough skin. The stem is slender and long

Characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, coarse-grained, firm and crunchy. Juicy, sweet and slightly aciditic, with hints of strawberry.

Uses: Eaten fresh and also used for baking and makes a great apple sauce. Used increasingly for cider.

Origins: Developed by W. A. Otto at the Northern Great Plains Field Station, Mandan, North Dakota (U.S.A.) by crossing Wealthy with Whitney . Tested as Mandan 42-12 and introduced in 1965 by the North Dakota State University.

Cultivation: Moderately vigorous and spreading. Bears annual crops.

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

Harvest: Ready for harvest starting in the middle of the third period and lasting about three weeks.
