Summary: A Golden-Delicious-style fresh-eating apple created by PRI's disease resistant apple breeding programme created in the 1970s.

Identification: Medium size tending to small. Round conic to conic. The base colour is pale greenish-yellow maturing to yellow, often with a pale orange blush on the sun-exposed face. The skin is thick, somewhat tough and glossy, sometimes with a slight russetting. A slender stem rises well above the level of the cavity which is narrow and medium deep. The calyx is small and closed, set in a narrow and markedly shallow, pleated basin.

Characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, Crisp, melting and moderately fine grained. Juicy, sweet-tart with complex flavours.

Origins: Developed in 1972 at the University of Illinois Horticultural Research Farm in Urbana, Illinois (U.S.A.) from a cross of Co-op 17 with pollen from Golden Delicious . Grown at the Purdue University Horticultural Research Farm in West Lafayette, Indiana (U.S.A.) as HER4T20. Selected in 1980 as best of the seedling crop resulting from the cross. This was one of over 40 varieties released in the course of the PRI cooperative programme to develop disease resistant cultivars carried out by the state universities in Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois.

Cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright dome-shaped tree. Semi-spur. Produces moderate harvests on a biennial basis.

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

Cold storage: Keeps up to four months in storage.

Vulnerabilities: Immune to scab, powdery mildew, resistant to fire blight, but prone to cedar apple rust.

Harvest: In the middle of the fifth period.
