Summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.

Uses: An excellent fresh-eating apple.

Origins: Developed in 1990 by PRI, a cooperative programme by the state Universities in Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois (U.S.A.) to create a selection of apples with a genetic immunity to scab, the Co-op 28 is a hybrid of PRI 1982 which carries the traits of Crandall , Golden Delicious , Rome Beauty and Malus floribunda 821 with Prima as the pollen parent. Prima itself is a PRI hybrid (see Co-op 2 ) which carries the genetics of Golden Delicious, Rome Beauty, Melba , Red Rome, Starr and Malus floribunda 821.
