Summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.

Identification: Medium size, round tending to round conic, sometimes round oblong. The base colour is pale yellow over which is a dark red wash that can cover as much as 90% of the surface. Thick skin.

Characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured. Fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy and sweet tart, lightly spicy. Refreshing and flavourful.

Uses: An excellent fresh eating apple.

Origins: A cooperative introduction from the State Universities in Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois in 1990. Developed by crossing Winesap with PRI 1042 which is a hybrid that contains among others the genetics of Delicious, Jonathan, Rome Beauty and Malus floribunda 821 crab.

Cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Upright. Spur bearer.

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

Cold storage: Keeps seven months in cold storage

Vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab, cedar apple rust and fire blight. Moderate resistance to mildew.

Harvest: During the first half of the fifth period. The fruit tends to be slightly woody at harvest, but this disappears after a few weeks in storage.
