Synonyms: Marketed as Prima, also known as Priestly Prima.
Summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.
Identification: Medium tending to large and round to round conic, often irregular shape and angular sides. The skin is smooth and waxy, medium tough and thick. The base colour is greenish yellow maturing to yellow, washed bright red over 60 to 80% of the surface and lightly striped. Lenticels are small to medium in size. The calyx is medium size and closed set in a deep and narrow basin which is surrounded by a knobbed crown. The stem is short and stout set in a medium wide, shallow and russeted cavity.
Characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, medium fine-grained, crisp and breaking when first harvested, becoming softer in storage. Sweet, juicy and somewhat spicy, with some tartness and rich in flavour.
Uses: Excellent and refreshing fresh eating apple, but it is also acclaimed for its apple sauce.
Origins: Developed as part of the PRI breeding initiative jointly undertaken by the Universities of Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois (U.S.A.) in a programme to create an array of scab-resistant varieties. The Co-op 2 is a cross of PRI14-510 (the seed parent carrying scab resistant properties from Malus floribunda 821, plus the genetics of Golden Delicious and Rome Beauty ) and NJ 123249 (the pollen parent, which is itself is derived from Melba , Wealthy , Starr and Red Rome Beauty ). The first seeds from this cross were planted in 1958 at the Illinois Experiment Station in Urbana, Illinois (U.S.A.) and it first fruited in 1963. Subsequent selections narrowed down the choices and the variety was released in 1970.
Cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Productive. The biennial tendency can be managed by thinning at fruit set. In the shaded inner canopy, the colouring of the fruit is often inadequate. Very prone to cold damage in winter.
Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
Notes: While this is an early ripening Jonathan-style apple with excellent scab resistance thanks to the Malus floribunda genetics, its short storage life makes it an apple best suited to farm-gate and farmer’s market sales. At one time, highly resistant to scab but the disease has evolved to a degree where this apple can no longer be reliably described as being immune.
Cold storage: The fruit is sensitive to cold and loses its firmness after three weeks in cold storage.
Vulnerabilities: Somewhat resistant to mildew. Resistant to cedar apple rust. Susceptible to fire blight and and fire blight. Sometimes suffers from bitter pit.
Harvest: Starting early in the fourth period and ripens over a span of three to four weeks. Fruit ripens unevenly on the tree requiring several pickings, but hangs well even after maturity.
Harvest period: 4
