Summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.

Identification: Medium to large size. Uniform shape, round tending to conic with some variations in shape. The thick and tough skin is smooth and has a slightly waxy feel. Base colour is is lime green maturing to pale yellow washed with dark- to purple-red. Lenticels are red and slightly sunken. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep, narrow basin which may be slightly russetted.

Characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured, medium grained, firm and breaking and very crisp. Juicy, slightly spicy and mildly acidic.

Uses: Intended as a fresh eating apple, it is also favoured for pies and cider.

Origins: Introduced in 1988 by PRI which is a cooperative breeding program between Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Universities (U.S.A.). It was selected in 1979 from a block of seedlings created by cross-pollinating two experimental varieties PRI 1018-101 (((Melba x (Wealthy x Starr)) x (Red Rome Beauty x Melba)) x (Jonathan x F2 26829-2-2)) as the seed parent and NJ50 (Mollie's Delicious x Julyred) as the pollen parent in 1973 at Urbana, Illinois in an effort to produce scab-resistant varieties.

Cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree. Bears fruit on short spurs. There is some tendancy to produce biennially if the blossoms are not thinned.

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

4 weeks

Cold storage: Keeps up to a month and a half in cold storage.

Vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab.

Harvest: Ready for harvest during the latter half of the third period. Fruit ripens progressively over a span of several weeks requiring multiple picking, but the fruit tends hang well even after completely ripe.
