Summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.

Identification: Medium to large, round tending to oblate. The skin base colour is yellow which is washed with glossy red over 80 to 90 per cent of its surface. Tan lenticels are most abundant toward the basin. The stem is medium short, medium thick and set in a deep, funnel shaped, russeted cavity. Smooth but somewhat tough skin.

Characteristics: The flesh is pale yellow, fine-grained, crisp and firm. Juicy, sweet, spicy and somewhat tart.

Uses: A good eating apple.

Origins: Developed by PRI, the cooperative breeding program by Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Universities. Produced in 1966 by crossing NJ123249 ((Melba x (Wealthy x Starr) x (Red Rome Beauty x Melba)) with pollen from PRI 1235?100 ((Jonathan x F2 26829) x ((Melba x (Wealthy x Starr)) x (Red Rome Beauty x Melba))) and raised in the apple breeding orchard of the Pomology Research Center of the Illinois Agricultural Experimental Station in Urbana, Illinois (USA). T F2 26829 carries the Vf genetic factor from Malus floribunda 821 which fosters an immunity to scab. Released in 1987.

Cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright tree. Produces a fair crop annually. Since it does not store well this apple is best suited to hobby orchardists and gardens

Ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.

Cold storage: Keeps for about a month.

Vulnerabilities: Very resistant to scab and rust, slightly susceptible to canker, fire blight and mildew.

Harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fourth season. The fruit remains on the tree at least two weeks after maturity with no loss of quality.
